The 1940s dance night "Swinging at the Palais", held at the Palais Theatre on the 25th of May was an enormous success with the theatre transformed to a dance venue of the war years. The Hobart City Concert Band played all the favourites from big bands such as Glen Miller and Count Basie and kept the well dressed audience dancing all night. In keeping with the old-time feel, prizes were awarded for the best dressed gentleman and lady, a spot dance competition was held and a traditional supper of sandwiches and home made cakes was served.
The evening began with a beginnerís lesson for those who needed it and the response to this was so great that regular swing dancing classes are now coming to Franklinís Palais Theatre. Starting on Saturday the 29th of June, Swing Central will hold weekly classes for a period of 5 weeks, and if there is enough interest, they will be followed immediately by a further 5 weeks of lessons. The classes will be aimed at total beginners -- no dance experience is necessary! They will start on Saturday 29th June and be held every Saturday afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm, followed by half hour to an hour of social dancing. The cost will be $8 full price or $7 concession per week to cover the expenses of teachers Stacey Davies and Dave Connell from Swing Central. The Palais Management Committee hopes to hold more dances with big bands in future so come along to the lessons so you can join in.
Furthermore, if you want to give your swing dancing a real kickstart, two of Melbourne's top swing teachers, Swing Patrol's Claudia Funder and Carl Joseph, are travelling to Hobart on the 15th and 16th of June to hold a weekend workshop at TJ's Dance Centre in 15 Sunderland St, Moonah. This is a great opportunity to start dancing and learn from two of the best teachers on offer. There will be approximately 6 hours of instruction on both days. You can either dance for the whole weekend, or for part of one or both days. This workshop will cater for raw beginners (Saturday 11:30 am to 6:30 pm) and for more experienced dancers (Sunday 10:30 am to 6:00 pm).
